Flea and Tick Prevention

We at Pittsfield Veterinary Hospital recommend using flea and tick control year-round. Ticks come out anytime that the temperature rises about 40 degrees Fahrenheit so we can even see them on warm, winter days. Combing tick prevention and the Lyme vaccine will help your pet be even more protected from this disease.

There are several very effective products that we recommend for you dog year round.

  • Bravecto: Bravecto is an oral chew that will give your dog 12 weeks of protection at a time. We see very few side effects from this products; the most common side effect is vomiting. Bravecto can be used on dogs and puppies 6 months of age and over.

  • Seresto Collar: The Seresto collar is worn by your dog for 8 months of protection. It needs to be worn close to the skin (you should be able to insert two finders between the collar and the neck). We do not see many side effects with the product and unlike other over-the-counter collars, there is no scent, residue, and is water-resistant. However, if your dog swims regularly, the collar will only be effective for 6 months as opposed to 8. Seresto can be used on dogs and puppies 7 weeks and older.

  • Credelio: Credelio is a monthly oral chew great for growing puppies. We will generally dispense this product for you puppy at their puppy visits. It can be used in dogs and puppies 8 weeks of age and older.

  • Advantix: Anvantix is a monthly topical flea and tick preventative. It can be used on dogs and puppies 7 weeks of age and older. Advantix is toxic to cats and needs to be used with caution if there are any cats in the household.
