The Animal ER uses the facilities of the Pittsfield Veterinary Hospital at 1634 West Housatonic St. in Pittsfield, MA. The Hospital is up on the hill. Look for the large blue sign 1/4 mile east of the intersection of Routes 20 & 41, just a 1/4 mile from the Hancock Shaker Village. Follow the driveway up the hill.

The Animal ER is an after-hours emergency clinic that handles trauma and critical care
emergencies during the hours that local veterinarians are not available. This service is supported by veterinarians in Berkshire County, and surrounding areas, and strives to provide the best possible medical and surgical services in an efficient yet caring environment.

The primary goal of the ER is to treat and stabilize sick and injured pets until they can be transferred to their regular veterinarian for  follow-up care. Our staff is well-equipped to handle any medical or surgical emergency, although the majority of our treatments are directed at providing acute, life-saving treatment and stabilization. Thus, a close relationship with area hospitals is critical and we rely on excellent communication with your veterinarian to provide the continuity of care needed to help your pet through their illness or injury.

The Animal ER is well equipped with all the medication, diagnostic, medical, and surgical equipment necessary to see your pet through most emergencies. There is a veterinarian and trained assistants on the premise at all times to provide for your pet's medical and surgical care.

Examination
The initial examination when your pet arrives at the hospital will enable the veterinarian to formulate a plan for the best course of treatment and diagnostic work.

Hospitalization
Clean, well monitored wards are available for those patients requiring surgery or hospitalization. While your pet is hospitalized they will be attended by a vigilant, caring staff member to assure that all medications, treatment, and monitoring are properly administered.  We stock red blood cells, plasma and oxyglobin.

Radiographs
When the doctor feels radiographs will help in the diagnosis and treatment of your pet's illness, they can be taken, processed, and evaluated in a matter of minutes. Ultrasound is also available when needed.

Blood Work/Diagnostic Lab
Our in-house laboratory is equipped to provide extensive diagnostic testing. Our laboratory equipment allows us to run complete blood counts, chemistry and elecytrolyte profiles, and tests for feline leukemia, feline immunodeficiency, canine parvo virus, and heartworm disease within minutes of obtaining a sample.  Our diagnostic abilities range from routine fecal analysis for intestinal parasites to more involved cardiovascular diagnostics such as electrocardiography and pulse oximetry to help determine the cause of your pet's illness.

Payment and Follow-up Care
A deposit is required for all pets left for hospitalized care. We accept cash, personal checks, Visa, Mastercard, Discover and AMEX. All services must be paid in full at time of service - we have no billing provisions. The costs of our services reflect the cost of providing quality after-hours care. We will always try to offer the best treatment option for your pet's condition; if however, this treatment is not practical for you, please do not hesitate to discuss your concerns with us.

Upon  release of your pet, you must return to your regular veterinarian for continued care. Acute illnesses change rapidly in pets - this continued care is critical for treatment success.  If you have no regular veterinarian you should select one for immediate follow-up care.
